MODIS Hot Spots from April 6-12, 2011

This map shows the MODIS Hot spots for the first days of April. Historic analyses carried out for the Dominican Republic show that the number of fires has increased over the years. For instance in 1990, 58 fires were detected, for 2000, 83 fires and for 2005, 137 fires were detected. All of these fires occurred in areas covered by forest. Several analyses carried out as part of the Dominican Republic's Forest Fire Management Support System in 2009 that due to the frequency of hot spots detected between 2001 and 2008 the high season for forest fires starts February 5 and finishes on April 21.
