Monitoring and eruption of Volcan Turrialba, Costa Rica, 2005 - 2010

The first image was taken on June 19, 2005, by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) sensor onboard the EO-1 satellite. The second image was taken on June 10, 2009, by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) sensor, and the third again by ALI on January 21, 2010. The two smaller images at the top of this graphic provide an even closer look at the crater during the eruption, using different ALI band combinations: one with only infrared bands (the blue image) to identify the intense heat at the center of the crater, and another with only visible bands (true color) to show the smoke plume billowing to the north.
