Tobacco Sold to Youth Under 18
This data table contains the percentage of licensed tobacco retailers that sold tobacco to youth under the age of 18 from the California Youth Tobacco Purchase Survey (YTPS) between 1997 and 2018.
The YTPS was replaced with the Synar Tobacco Purchase Survey (STPS) in 2019 that utilizes youth under the age of 21. The YTPS was an annual survey that is conducted to gauge the rate of illegal tobacco sales to youth under the age of 18 across California, in accordance with California’s Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement Act (STAKE Act) and the federal Synar Amendment. Licensed tobacco retailers that are accessible to minors under the age of 18 throughout California are randomly selected for the survey.
