Information on soils is integral to ecosystem restoration. The soil environment and its physical, chemical and biological components are critical to understanding the severity of degradation and opportunity for restoration. Data on both soil organisms and ecosystem processes generates a body of knowledge that can be useful in improving the outcomes of restoration and are best considered in the context of the severity of the original perturbation.
