Trapping Results of Small Rodents at Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge

From Nov. 1, 1996 to Nov. 5, 1996, I conducted a trapping study of small rodents at Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge. The objective of the study was to determine habit preferences of small rodents. During this time, sixty traps were baited and set each day, at three separate locations. The locations of the trap lines were chosen for a particular habitat type. Each set of traps were baited in the late afternoon and were checked the following morning. The current list of small rodents at Lacassine NWR was constructed between 1960 and 1973. According to refuge personnel the list was derived from observations made by J. Valentine and literature available during that time. The information regarding the methods used to construct the list was provided by USFWS BIologist, W. Syron. He obtained the information during a telephone conversation with J. Valentine. The list includes the following small rodents: the Marsh rice rat, Fulvous harvest mouse, White-footed mouse, Hispid cotton rat, Roof rat, Norway rat, and the House mouse(Valentine 1973).
