Diet information about hake is important for their contributions to the California Current Ecosystem as both predator and prey. Therefore, changes and trends in hake diet can possibility be indicative of changes in the system as a whole. Scientists from the Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) extract stomachs at sea and preserve them in formalin. The contents are examined and recorded for use in later analysis. This project is ongoing as a component of the Integrated Acoustic and Trawl (IAT) Survey conducted biennially by the NWFSC, United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Pacific Biological Station (PBS), Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Canada. Stomachs are also taken as a regular part of the NWFSC West Coast Groundfish Survey.
