Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has created a model using the integral equation model (IEM) to process radar (RADARSAT-2) data to soil moisture products containing surface (0 – 5cm) soil moisture information for land under annual crop production experiencing bare-earth conditions. The study areas are focused over five test sites which are situated over the Real-time In-situ Soil Monitoring for Agriculture (RISMA) network. The final “RADARSAT-2 Surface Soil Moisture” product has a sub-18m spatial resolution. The RISMA network is used to validate the processed data which provides an overall assessment of accuracy. The processing chain for the soil moisture maps includes satellite data acquisition, radar processing, validation and data dissemination and storage. Continual work is required in order to fulfill the project’s goals which include developing the ability to process data under vegetative conditions and providing data in optimal formats to a wide range of end-users for use in projects such as VRI studies, precision agriculture prescriptions and disease risk forecasts.
