AFSC/ABL: Alaska ShoreZone

The ShoreZone coastal habitat mapping system is a mature system that has been in use since the early 1980s. The system images the coastal zone and then catalogs both geomorphic and biological features at effective mapping scales of better than 1:10,000. The ShoreZone protocols are standardized and updated as need. All ShoreZone datasets are kept current and made widely accessible. To this end, the low tide-oblique aerial imagery has been web-posted, allowing any web-user to fly Alaskas coastlines that have been imaged. Selected thematic data is available online through a GIS web enabled site; users can select themes of interest (e.g., eelgrass occurrence) to create region-wide or site specific maps.
