Calibration Sphere Material Properties (Development of physical and acoustic testing protocols to validate metal spheres as standard targets for echosounder calibrations)

This project addresses the recent discovery of inconsistency in sphere material properties. The specific proposed research activities include four major components:

  1. Systematic theoretical analysis.

  2. Measurements of the sphere physical properties.

  3. Establishment of the practical protocols of the calibration sphere selection.

This is a collaborative research project with Dr Dave Demer at the SWFSC. The people at the NWFSC involved in this project are Dezhang Chu (PI), Stan Tomich, and Steve de Blois. The project officially ended in 2011, but more laboratory measurements need to be done, and we are also planning to write a peer-reviewed paper.
