Prioritization of Devils Lake WMD fee title WPA's was constructed using a spreadsheet model for each county within the DLWMD. A set of WPA metrics were chosen, then ranked by consensus of the DLWMD management staff. These metrics included: 1. Size of WPA, 2. Waterfowl pair designation (thunderstorm), 3. Cover type (i.e. New DNC, Old DNC, Prairie Reconstruction, Native Prairie), 4. Wetland Percentage on WPA, 5. Wetland Diversity (i.e. 1 wetland versus 10 wetlands), 6. Manageable Upland Acreage, 7. WPA ease of access, 8. Grassland bird conservation area rank (high, low), 9. Threatened and Endangered Species present, 10. WPA surrounded by wetland easements (a percentage), 11. WPA surrounded by grass (a percentage). The metrics were grouped in three categories; 1. Biological, 2. Logistical, 3. Landscape. The model produces a rank of each WPA, and can then be sorted in numerous ways - a. By County, b. By WMD, c. By Habitat Type, d. By Avian Resources. Future iterations can be included, and will contain "time since last defoliation" and be spatially displayed using ArcGIS software. The model also prioritizes WPA habitat monitoring conducted by the District biological staff.
