Landsat-8/9 Satellite Detections

The Landsat-8/9 satellites offers enhanced thermal capabilities and multi-purpose imagery to monitor land cover and change. Landsat is operated by the U.S. Geological Services (USGS) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Both satellites carry the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS). Landsat-8 carries TIRS Collection 2 Level 1, while Landsat-9 carries TIRS Collection 2 Level 2. The OLI captures 9-band visible-infrared (VIS), near-infrared (NIR), and shortwave-infrared (SWIR) radiation in 14-bit radiometric resolution. TIRS measures 2-band thermal infrared radiation emitted from the Earth's surface.

Landsat near real-time (NRT) data products and archived data are accessible through the NASA Fire Information Resource Management System (NASA FIRMS) and the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center archives.
