Meteosat-12 Satellite Detections

The Meteosat geostationary satellite series provides imagery for the early detection of fast-developing severe weather, weather forecasting, and climate monitoring. Meteosat-12 (also called Meteosat - Imager 1) is the first of three satellites in the most recent Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) series, which includes two imaging satellites and one sound satellite covering Europe and Africa. The Flexible Combined Imager on board Meteosat-12 performs full-disc scans over Europe, Africa, and surrounding regions every 10 minutes to enable severe weather event forecasting, including the assistance and monitoring of fires. The Lightning Imager on board Meteosat-12 detects lightning flashes over the Europe and Africa regions, and over the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and Mediterranean Sea.

MTG data is openly available via EUMETCast and EUMETSAT Data Store.
