Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) Satellite Detections

The EUMETSAT Meteosat series consists of geostationary imaging satellites. Meteosat-9, Meteosat-10, and Meteosat-11 are the currently operational satellites in the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite series, which supports severe weather and active fire detections, weather forecasting, and climate monitoring. Meteosat-10 and Meteosat-11 provide full disc images over Europe, Africa, and parts of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Meteosat-9 provides the Indian Ocean Data Coverage (IODC) service.

The Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) optical sensor on board MSG also provides near real-time Rapid Scanning Services (RSS) Active Fire Monitoring Product. SEVERI captures full Earth scan imagery and uses spectral channels, including a High Resolution Visible (HRV) channel, to absorb ozone, water vapor and carbon dioxide, MSG satellites allows meteorologists to analyze the characteristics of atmospheric air masses and reconstruct a three-dimensional view of the atmosphere. The 1km horizontal image resolution for the visible light spectral channel also helps weather forecasters in detecting and predicting the onset or end of severe weather.
