Latent mortaliy (A study to evaluate latent mortality associated with passage through Snake River dams)

This BPA funded project that began in 2005 evaluates the amount of latent or extra mortality caused by passage through three of the four Snake River Dams. Latent mortality is mortality that is caused by passing through the Snake River dams, but is not expressed until after they have left the hydropower system. Hatchery spring/summer Chinook were PIT tagged at Lower Granite Dam from 2005 through 2011 and released in the tailrace of Lower Granite Dam, or trucked to below Ice Harbor Dam and released, thus avoiding any latent mortality associated with having passed three of the four Snake River dams. When adult returns are complete in 2014, the smolt-to-adult returns between groups will be compared, and a final report provided to BPA. Latent mortality study data
