Taxonomic validation for amphibian species on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Category 2 Species list, brdsar0010

A list of 120 amphibian and reptile taxa proposed for listing as endangered or threatened for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was reviewed. These taxa were placed in category 2 because in most instances they were submitted for consideration in the absence of any validation of their taxonomic status. The list was reviewed in order to confirm that (a) the designated entities had biological reality as species, (b) that the scientific names used to identify the taxa were correctly applied to the species of concern, and (c) that the scientific names used were nomenclatorially valid. In addition, corrections were made to errors in nomenclature, references were provided to pertinent literature, and qualified individuals who would be able to carry out taxonomic studies needed for clarification were identified.
