This feature layer represents the approximate boundaries of ZIP Codes in the City of Tempe and was created with data sourced from the United States Census Bureau's ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) combined with information directly acquired from the United States Postal Service (USPS). Specifically, ZIP Codes 85284, 85283, and 85282 are sourced from the U.S. Census as ZCTAs, while ZIP Codes 85281 and 85288 are sourced from documents provided direction from the USPS. These data have been merged to show the generalized ZIP Code areas in Tempe.Note on Data SourcesPlease note that it is uncommon to merge these two different data types together, but this was done in order to address the ZIP Code change in Tempe. ZIP Codes (Zone Improvement Plan Codes) are a trademark of the United States Postal Service (USPS). In July, 2022, the USPS split ZIP Code 85281, created a new ZIP Code 85288. The USPS provided general boundaries for the new Zip Code area directly with City of Tempe staff as well as through media outlets. There may be differences in the new ZIP Code areas provided to media vs City of Tempe staff. There may also be ongoing changes or refinement to the new ZIP Code boundaries affection 85281 and 85288. ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are created by the United States Census Bureau and represent approximate ZIP code areas geographically.
