JPSS VIIRS Satellite Fire Detections

This data collection contains near real-time (NRT) active fire and thermal hostpot detections from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP), NOAA-20, and NOAA-21, which are part of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Space and Aeronautics Administration (NASA). JPSS is a series of polar-orbiting environmental satellites that collect meteorological data. Suomi-NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21 currently fly six instruments including VIIRS, the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES), Libera, Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), and Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS).

VIIRS collects visible and infrared images used for active fire and hotspot detections and atmospheric data collections. VIIRS data products collected on the JPSS satellites are available as a layer on the NASA Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), and more information can also be found on NASA's VIIRS 375 m Active Fire Product landing page: https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/data/instruments/viirs/viirs-i-band-375-m-active-fire-data.
