Epibenthic fish and Decapod crustaceans; trawling

The Fish/Invertebrate Lab at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center initiated trawling on the Rhode River in 1981. Conducted on a monthly basis from March through December, trawl samples are taken at one station in the Chesapeake Bay, two stations at the mouth of the river, and one station at the head of the river. Organisms collected consist primarily of mesohaline fish and crabs. Five species, bay anchovy, spot, blue crab, hogchoker and Atlantic croaker dominate the population, accounting for approximately 90% of the organisms caught per trawl. Less frequently encountered species include white perch, striped bass, sea trout, and Atlantic silverside.
