| notes | The fish weir was initially constructed in March 1983. It is located at the mouth of Muddy Creek, a primary tributary of the Rhode River, and consists of a series of fences designed to funnel fish into two openings, one facing upstream and one facing downstream. At approximately weekly intervals, nets are deployed at each opening for a period of twenty-four hours, after which time all fish are identified to species, counted and a subset measured. Over fifty species of fish and invertebrates have been collected since weir sampling was initiated in 1983. The majority of these species are rare or occur in low abundances; five species, mummichog, Atlantic silverside, Atlantic menhaden, sheepshead minnow and spot, account for 95% of the total abundance. Other frequently encountered species include blue crabs, white perch, striped bass, pumpkinseed, bay anchovy and gizzard shad. |
