Marine Pollution Prevention Act

The Marine Pollution Prevention Act of 2008 implements the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, including related Protocols (MARPOL) and its Annexes I (oil pollution), II (noxious liquid substances pollution), and V (garbage), as well as Annex IV of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. The Act imposes requirements on ships for handling of wastes from ships' operations, as well as notification requirements for oil discharges. For example, the Act prohibits disposal at sea of plastics, disposal of garbage in special areas (generally, semi-enclosed seas, Antarctica, and the wider Caribbean), disposal of garbage within 25 miles of land, and disposal of food wastes and other refuse within 12 miles of land.
