| notes | The NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) 5 km (0.05-degree exactly) global satellite coral bleaching thermal stress monitoring product suite described here is a next-generation version of CRW's heritage twice-weekly 50 km (0.5-degree exactly) global satellite coral bleaching thermal stress monitoring product suite. This high-resolution 5 km suite currently includes daily global Sea Surface Temperature (SST), SST Anomaly, Coral Bleaching HotSpot, coral bleaching Degree Heating Week (DHW), and Bleaching Alert Area products. It now also includes daily 5 km Regional Virtual Stations, based on subsets of the daily global products, and their associated time series data and graphs, 5 km Bleaching Thermal Stress Gauges for current and predicted conditions, Google Maps and Google Earth interfaces for the 5 km Regional Virtual Stations, and regional subsets of global product images. The 5 km product suite also includes year-to-date, monthly, and annual composites (maximum and, if applicable, mean and minimum) composites of all daily global 5 km products. The NOAA/National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) operational daily global 5 km Geostationary (Geo)-Polar Blended Nighttime-only SST analysis, based on multiple polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites, is used to derive the high-resolution 5 km coral bleaching monitoring products. A new climatology, derived from the recently reprocessed historical Version 5.2 Pathfinder Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) SST data set, is applied to derive the bleaching thermal stress monitoring products. NOAA CRW's daily global 5 km coral bleaching monitoring product suite (Version 1) was originally released in June 2012 and based preliminarily on the NOAA/NESDIS 5 km Geo-Polar Blended Day-Night SST Analysis. Version 2 of NOAA CRW's daily global 5 km products (SST, SST Anomaly, Coral Bleaching HotSpot, DHW, and Bleaching Alert Area) was released officially in May 2014 (as documented by this metadata file) and is based on the NESDIS 5 km Geo-Polar Blended Night-only SST Analysis; the Version 2 product suite significantly advance CRW's capability for near-real-time satellite coral bleaching thermal stress monitoring. The new 5 km coral bleaching monitoring products comprise the core of CRW's next-generation Decision Support System (DSS) for coral reef ecosystem management. The 5 km products are expected to undergo continuous improvements over the next few years. |
