NPS Alaska Eastern Area FFI Fire Effects Monitoring Data

Fire effects and fuels monitoring data collected at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve from 2004 - 2021. Data collected include vascular and non-vascular plant cover, shrub density, tree density, burn severity, fuel load, and ground permafrost depths. Database is formatted for FFI, a sequel server database.

Fire and fuels treatment effects monitoring data collected at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve in Alaska. The data were collected during spring/summer field seasons by fire ecologists and NPS Alaska Eastern Area Fire Management crew from 2004 - 2020. Data is organized by park and projects within the FFI database. Most fire effects plots were 30-m x 1-m belt transects marked with GPS points at each end of the 30-m transect. Plot data collection includes: vascular and non-vascular species ocular cover estimates, point intercept to measure ground and vegetation cover, tree density by species and diameter size class within 30-m2 area, tree measurements, ground thaw depths, burn severity points along transect, general site descriptions and photo points at each end of the transect. Most mechanical fuels treatment plots are 4-m or 8-m radius circular plots, with a 16-m transect running North to South. Most plots are marked with wooden stakes at the center of the plot. At each visit photos were taken of each plot and data collected may include: vascular and non-vascular plant ocular cover, point intercept cover estimates of vegetation and ground cover, tree densities, tree measurements, active layer depths, Brown’s woody transects, and general site descriptions.

When other methodologies were used, they are documented in the FFI database under the description for the projects. See attached metadata regarding crown measurements for data in the Individual Tree protocol. See Plot database descriptions document for more information about projects.
