The HayWired Scenario: An Urban Earthquake in a Connected World

What might it be like the next time the Hayward fault has a large earthquake? To answer that question, USGS scientists examined a hypothetical earthquake, the magnitude 7.0 HayWired earthquake scenario. This story map summarizes the earthquake hazards in the HayWired scenario’s 11-county study area, including the intensity of ground shaking, the aftershocks in the first two years after the mainshock, the rock slip that can happen during and after an earthquake, and the chance of experiencing liquefaction or landslides during the mainshock. This story map is based on the first published report from the HayWired Scenario project: The HayWired earthquake scenario—Earthquake hazards, U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2017-5013-A–H
