U.S. Geological Survey Inland Bathymetric and Topobathymetric Survey Inventory, version 1

The 3DEP U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Inland Bathymetric and Topobathymetric Survey Inventory for the conterminous US is a database for digital, geospatial three-dimensional bathymetric and topobathymetric datasets created as a resource for public and private science and engineering analyses and modeling. Initiated in 2018, the database includes all published USGS inland to coastal survey reports and datasets, if available, that were discovered through online research. The Inventory is updated as new published data become available. The long-term goal of the National Geospatial Program 3D Elevation Program is to collect and provide lidar-based 3D elevation products. Although topobathymetric lidar surveys are supported and increasingly conducted by the USGS and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Army Corps of Engineers Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Center of Expertise (USACE) partners, almost all USGS bathymetric surveys inventoried are conducted using acoustic survey systems. Survey system availability, cost/benefit analyses, and/or site condition factors indicate acoustic surveys will continue to be important for developing bathymetric and topobathymetric elevation surfaces, and the 3DEP is working with NOAA and the USACE to align 3DEP specifications for quality bathymetric or topobathymetric data and products with specifications used by these agencies and the International Hydrographic Organization. Survey coverage footprints are depicted in shapefiles for survey datasets included in the initial inventory. Shapefile map packages have been created for each USGS Region and will be updated to include new survey dataset footprints as time permits.
